The advent of Netbooks provides a significant opportunity to take computers out of the computer lab and integrate them into classrooms across the board. Flickinger, an educator for over twenty years, advocates a one-on-one approach for the use of Netbooks - that is, issue each child a netbook to use and care for throughout the school year. When implemented properly, netbooks allow students to interact, collaborate and work together on projects, self-direct and take ownership of their learning. Netbook teaching enhances traditional teaching. It does not replace it." The needs of administrators and IT departments are addressed as well, with sections covering such topics as student responsibilities, identifying classroom wi-fi dead zones, USB flash drives, maintenance, operating systems and physical components. He also provides guidelines for choosing from among the many different netbooks available, as well as some of the physical challenges facing a school implementing netbooks.

From the Back Cover
When a teacher receives a complete set of netbooks for his or her classroom, their teaching methods are going to dramatically change. I don't say this to be an alarmist or to be sensational, but I simply state it as a matter of fact from what I've witnessed in my trials of netbooks in classrooms. Imagine for a moment being a teacher in a one-to-one classroom where you stand at the front of the room looking over your students at their desks with their netbooks open ready to be instructed. What do you do?

21st Century Skills Needed - This Book Helps Teachers Deliver
By Dale Marshall
The last two decades have seen an absolutely incredible explosion in the digital world - the amount of information stored, created, accessed and manipulated digitally is mind-boggling, and touches every area of our lives.

The level of sophistication and proficiency expected not only of college freshmen, but even high school freshmen and younger, is so far above what was expected even ten years ago, it's immeasurable!

We all know that younger students learn more easily, and so it makes sense that schools start their instruction in computer skills early in their students' lives, usually by second grade. What doesn't make sense is the fact that while computers and the skills required to use them led the charge into the twenty-first century, the strategy for teaching these skills to children - the skills they'll need to survive - remains firmly rooted in the 1980's in most schools.

In his book Teaching with Netbooks, Brad Flickinger shares his vision of schools that teach 21st Century Skills - schools in which computers become a regular tool used daily in the education process, rather than a subject taught in a special "lab" for about twenty minutes, once a week. Until now, the relatively high cost of even low-end desktop computers prohibits schools from providing a computer for each child, forcing them into the computer lab approach, with one computer shared by literally dozens of students, thus restricting the volume of material that can be taught. As Flickinger points out,

" . . . how is a second grade student really going to learn keyboarding by going to a computer lab just once a week and practicing for a few minutes? By the time students return to the computer lab seven days later, they've forgotten almost everything from the previous week, which results in rather slow development of their typing capabilities."

With the advent of netbooks, this unhappy situation doesn't have to continue. At street prices of around $200 and the promise of volume discounts that will drive costs even lower, it's now possible for schools to provide students with their own computers that can be used daily in every class, enhancing their learning in all subjects and certainly developing computer skills early in elementary school that many students haven't learned by high school!

Flickinger doesn't just make the recommendation to switch to netbooks, however. He points out that with the proper vision, teachers can creatively use the netbooks in every subject and use them to help create time to spend more time with students having difficulty.

Chapters like "Becoming a Netbook Teacher," "Classroom Management with Netbooks" and "Embedding Netbooks into your Current Curriculum" discuss some of the tasks facing the modern teacher, covering everything from the physical challenges of introducing netbooks into the average elementary school classroom. Flickinger goes on to consider how this new technology will actually enhance students' learning, in the chapter Netbooks and 21st Century Skills, which includes topics like Research and Information Fluency, Digital Citizenship and Critical Thinking, Problem Solving and Decision Making.

Flickinger recognizes that this is a controversial issue, and addresses head-on the issue of computers as entertainment devices (he points out that in a classroom environment, teachers have full control over what's on the computers). Flickinger counters the objection that using computers extensively in classrooms will lead to isolation and stunt the development of important social skills by pointing out that with email and online conferencing, computers can actually be used to aid in the development of those skills.

Teaching with Netbooks includes a section that administrators will find invaluable, titled Moving Forward with your Vision - Where to Begin? This section deals with the issues these folks are likely to confront - which netbooks to buy, which operating system to use, keyboard and display size, processors, hard drives, battery charging, licensing and installing applications, etc.

Who would benefit from this book? Teachers and other professionals in the education field, of course. In addition, parents of elementary students, college students considering education as a career choice, businessmen and -women who will hire from the labor pool graduated by our schools every year, and especially the public officials who are certain to become involved in the public debate should read this book and become familiar with the issues and principles Flickinger points out so well.

Indded, a better question would be "Who wouldn't benefit from this book?"
