The military leadership of Japan, dominated by the ages-old clans of the samurai class, embarked on a war in 1941 believing that the Americans and British wouldn't fight, but they also knew that Japan could not win a prolonged war. If the West didn't quit, well, the Japanese had no contingency for that. So why did Japan start a war at all? This and other questions are addressed in this new book. Other topics include: With a few exceptions, the Japanese Army was not well equipped, but was trained to attack even if the situation was hopeless; the Japanese Navy was never adequate to the task required of it in the Pacific War and the merchant fleet was even wors; the Japanese air forces suffered from acute shortages throughout the conflict that were often the result of their industrial shortcomings. Beatty and Rochwerger discuss these and many other issues in this provocative and imaginative inquiry into Japan in World War II. Photos, index.

What Were They Thinking
By William K. Crum
This book makes a different interpretation of the Meiji restoration and it's impact on Japanese society. Proceeding from that revised view it shows how Japan entered the war. This new approach does answer all the questions about Japans role in World War Two.

A good summary
By Ken Friedman
I purchased this book because it is one that is in my area of interest. It is a small book that resembles a long, thick pamphlet (187 pages including endnotes). My review is a brief one because the book is a relatively fast read.
My overall assessment is that the book provides a good summary of the reasons the authors believed Japan used to go to war. The initial section that describes the historical background prior to 1941 offers a summary for those who need to read this at that level. The sections that list the political, geographical, and military problems the Japanese faced before attacking Pearl Harbor are also discussed in a succinct manner. The writing is clear while the book readily, quickly, and effectively gets to the point.
The book's sections are essays. They seem to be the result of research done at the university graduate school level. The authors readily admit in the preface that they wrote the book without the benefit of exhaustive research normally done by other academic historians. While detailed as far as they go, the book would not, IMHO, be enough for anyone doing serious research into answering the question the title offers. Nonetheless, if a prospective reader wishes to get a good overview of this topic, this book meets the needs of such a reader.

What were the Japanese thinking, in WW2?? by John Beatty and Lee Rochwerger.
By Jay D. Zollitsch
This book is a very good read. The concise factual format is somewhat original and refreshing. I read the book in 2 sittings. Even though this book is a fast read, it is comprehensive in that it covers 2 major subjects/topics. First, it addresses the socio-political mindset of the Japanese leadership/military leadership, and how this leadership lead Japan to its significant political miscalculations. You really do get a great insight into "what were they thinking", which is also an appropriate title for the book. Secondly, the book also elaborates on the Japanese commerical and economic unpreparedness for a long war, a technical war, and a total world war. Specific Japanese deficiencies are discussed, such as their inability to machine equipment to fine tolerances, their shortage of specific resources, their lack of R&D in general, etc. which was quite enlightening. I am a military veteran and have read a good deal of WW2 military history, and there were quite a few political and economic insights in this book that were new to me. I highly recommend this book. There are a ton of insights and facts in this short read, which wastes very few words. My compliments to the authors.
