First of all, this book is about the experiences of various Transsexuals dealing with their experiences in reality and life. The book is excellently written, and is strong enough to stand alone as what it is.
The characters are interesting, and the details draw the reader in. It's obvious that the author has put a lot of her personal life into the book, and researched the lives of others rather thoroughly. Common themes of Nebraska and the Catholic Church are especially prominent.
I have often pondered what things I was doing now that might be disapproved of by future generations. For example, while there were blatant racists in the 1940's...there was still a baseline of acceptable behavior by less racist people that would be considered shocking today. I do not want to be judged by history, but after reading this, I have come to realize that history will DEFINITELY judge contemporary society for the way it treats Transsexuals, and if one desires to avoid being judged harshly in the light of future generations, one would be wise to avoid stereotypes and preconceptions as much as possible.
This book does an excellent job of doing that. The characters are real people, with real hopes and dreams. More importantly, while the greater facts of their lives are taken into account, they are still all quite different as individuals and are extremely in-depth. This is literature in the finest sense of the word; both for the quality of writing it uses and for the themes that it explores.

Interesting Collection of Stories
By Kate Jonez
Many of the best writers write because they have an obsessive need to make the reader understand the world as they see it. Again and again Stacy Stephens returns to the themes of transsexual identity, Roman Catholicism, and outsiders living in an insular Nebraska environment. Ms, Stephens has an good command of the language. Her word choice is sometimes quirky, but often just what is needed to bring the scenes and characters to life. While many of the stories in this collection are entertaining and informative or even shocking, "Why Had Coronado Never Gone Back to Spain?" stands out as a nearly perfect example of what a short story should be. The one negative criticism I have is that many of the transsexual protagonists have very similar voices and circumstances and occasionally I felt I was reading a new story with a protagonist I had met before. Such strong themes presented in such a distinct voice perhaps belong in a single longer work. I hope I get the chance to read a novel by Stacy Stephens. I'm sure it would be exceptional.

Circles of Reality
By Kimberly Wade
In The Bohemian Girl and Other Stories, Stacy Danielle Stephens explores concentric circles of reality - place, community, relationships, and self. Many of the stories are set in the author's home state of Nebraska. I admit, prior to reading this book, I thought of Nebraska as an extension of Kansas, but Stephens brings the landscape to life - it's "as flat as fudge poured into a pan," creating a foundational reality to stories of characters that exhibit an earnest sweetness underlying their tough exteriors. Here are truly funny stories of people in pain, where the pain is not hidden or laughed at - an impressive balancing act that Stephens executes with intriguing sensitivity that avoids sentimentality. Her writing is nothing less than brilliant.
