Simple... Elegant... Effective... Relevant...

The preceding words are not typically the first that come to mind when broaching the topic of the oft maligned performance based management framework known as Earned Value Management (EVM). Thankfully Mr. Lipke is well on his way toward initiating a true sea-change in the way which many day-to-day project management practitioners and members of the general business management communities at large perceive the practicality and utility of the practice.
Walt has achieved a singular stroke of genius in developing Earned Schedule (ES) as a key performance metric. In doing so he has presented us with an easily understood and convenient way to translate a set of abstract monetarily-aligned Schedule Performance Indicators into tangible, time-based Schedule Performance Indicators in the universally understood units of days, weeks and months. Ironically the monetary unit based Schedule Performance Index (SPI)$ becomes less and less pertinent as a project nears completion and is totally lost as a permanent indicator when the project is closed out. ES maintains it's integrity and applicability through out the project life-cycle much like the Cost Performance Index (CPI). Thus ES provides a long term and lasting benefit as a tool for comparing similar projects and allowing for better decisions on future endeavors!
As a note of interest the author of the book's foreword, Kym Henderson, has contributed much in the way of providing solid evidence as to the validity of the premise of the Earned Schedule method in his own right. His diligent efforts and painstaking research have in no small measure furthered the credibility and eased the acceptance of ES not only in his native Australia but internationally as well.
As someone who became keenly interested in the potential of ES back in 2004 and who cajoled (if not pleaded with) Mr. Lipke to provide us with a book on his insights and thought processes on this invaluable new tool, I can enthusiastically state that he has not disappointed us and it has been worth the wait.
The bottom line here is that I highly recommend this book to any and all with an interest and the desire to achieve continually greater "bang for the buck" on behalf of our Clients and Stakeholders as we endeavor to execute projects of every type.

Essential Guide for Serious Program Managers and EV Experts

Besides providing an excellent treatment of Earned Schedule (a fundamental EV improvement in tracking schedule progress), Mr. Lipke explainns how to effectively use it in implementing numerous critical program management activities including schedule Analysis, schedule adherence, and outcome prediction--and ties thse to performance management, program recovery and rebaselining, and staffing. His discussion of the much under-utilized but fundamental EV measure "To-Complete-Performance-Index" should not be missed. Anyone serious about effective program management will gain important insights from this book, and should have it at the ready as an essential program management tool for success.

A pioneering work

Walt Lipke is a pioneer in the field of Earned Value and this work is destined to be a classic that field. The concept of Earned Schedule described in this text represents a missing element in the traditional view of EV and one that is destined to change the way schedule analysis is performed. It is not often that one gets to read a seminal text on a topic that is emerging in the real world. This is one of those.
