This story begins as war stories often do: as a call to arms. In the wake of 9/11, Aaron Roston joined the New York City Teaching Fellows program, created to parachute elite "career-changers" into the schools euphemistically known as "hard-to-staff." Thousands answered the call; few were chosen. 25 members of Roston's class began their service in 2002; by the summer of 2005, only 7 remained in the system. An all-to-common occurrence, as half of all new public school teachers quit within five years. Thus FELLOWS IN ARMS is the view from the sharp end of educational reform, and dramatizes what the term "teacher accountability" really means.
The story of idealistic teachers in urban school settings has become cliché. But FELLOWS IN ARMS is different: It uses memoir, history and reportage to create a narrative that finds humor and drama in equal measure. The book also expands beyond a personal story to become that of Roston's Fellows classmates who are assembled like a platoon for their training - the rich kid, the wise guy, the tough chick - and sent to the Bronx. Who will emerge triumphant, and who will be beaten down? No dry policy book, this is the maddening, sometimes tragic, often comic saga of what ensued when the school bell sounded.

Review
"When arranging your next guided tour of the underworld that is the New York City public education system, make sure your Virgil comes equipped with boxing gloves, a razor-sharp tongue, and good, stout drink. You'll be safe with Aaron Roston, in other words. His caustic wit, prodigious intellect, and wise humor will illumine the depths--and maybe even blaze a trail back to daylight." --Alex Shakar, author of The Savage Girl

A teacher's tale that Hollywood hasn't ruined!
By J. R. Jones
At last there is a teaching memoir that doesn't glorify students, teachers or administrators. Instead, this is an honest portrayal of real people working harder than most of us imagine at becoming and being good, caring teachers. And there are no superheroes here; Roston and his cohorts are talented yet "normal" people who face very long odds and little real help in their efforts. Indeed, the story is more CATCH-22 than DEAD POETS SOCIETY. But this is exactly what's missing from the field of education publishing. Frankly, I found Roston's chronicle to be far more inspiring than the "miracle workers" depicted in most of the books out there. And as another reviewer suggested, FIA should serve as a great primer for any would-be teacher.
Incredibly written and always engaging, Fellows in Arms is a book that anyone interested (or already engaged) in the vocation of education would be wise to read. It's illuminating, funny, and frustrating: not unlike Education itself.

Laugh or Cry? It was a toss-up.
By A. Collier
I think everyone has either read or watched the predictable story of the enlightened teacher who enters the ghetto classroom and inspires the students to great heights. Rest assured, this book doesn't use any tired formulas. Instead, it delivers the true(which means messy and gritty) story of Aaron Roston and his fellow teaching fellows as they attempt to teach in the roughest schools in all of New York City. The teachers start out very optimistic, and the insanity of the school system makes for some laugh out loud moments, as well as moments where you simply drop your jaw in disbelief and wonder what the hell has happened to education in our country - both education for students and education for new teachers. As a former teacher myself, I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in what the real life of a teacher in an urban setting is like.

Wry Look at Deeply Troubling Educational Issues
By Natalie A. Champ
I wish I could say that this was an "easy" read. Oh, the writing is witty and his detailed accounts of his experiences as an undersupported, underappreciated faculty member in a rough school district made me feel the same frustration he clearly felt in his classroom. That's what makes this book both a pleasure and a source of anxiety; you cannot finish the book believing that Roston's experiences are of the singular variety, and once you accept that his "fellows in arms" likewise suffered from defeated expectations during their tenure in the public school districts, you will begin to feel cynical about the so-called educational reform efforts ushered in during Bush's administration. But, Roston doesn't leave you mired in what could feel like crippling despair about our children's educational prospects. His account reveals flaws -- both glaring and subtle -- within our educational system that could be reformed, if only we have the will to do it. At the very least, our respect for teachers like Roston should increase tenfold, and we should reconsider how our school administrations support (or don't, in most cases) these dedicated professionals. With the increased attention towards administrative malfeasance in both the NYC and L.A. school districts (including incomprehesively long, costly and pointless teaching probation "limbos"), Roston's book should be embraced for what it reveals about what it will take to keep good teachers in the classroom. It's darkly funny, and certainly a worthwhile one for parents, prospective teachers and school administrators.
