Using and Mastering the Tarot and the Astrological Layout is a dynamic method to using the tarot cards, astrology and numerology in an innovative approach toward interpretation and integration of meanings. Each house represents a specific set of issues and circumstances particular to each area of life such as relationships, traditions, career and more. This method allows you to separate the issues with clarity in a way that the Celtic cross and other layouts don't. Timing is established through the separate layers and any person in you client's life can be found simply by counting to the appropriate house then simply reading the wheel as a new client.  Learning this method will provide tremendous dimension and insight to your readings. Why just use the tarot when you can see so much more?

A great book, should be read
By Peter
(Book review for: "Tarot: The Astrological Layout" by John Maerz.)

This unique book contains an explanation of a very practical application of Tarot cards to the twelve Astrological Houses.

A prior familiarity with the meaning and application of Astrological Houses, planetary angles, and the Derivative House System would be very helpful, although the author does explain these somewhat in his book.

The book is logical, well structured, and easily understood if read with focus and attention. Of course, proper assimilation of the material will require extensive memory work, depending on your background knowledge. Mr. Maerz gives a very short basic definition for each of the 78 cards, both Upright and Inverted. And then you can add more meanings to the cards once they are dealt out on the Houses - he explains how. Also, this book contains the best translation of the Court Cards to their astrological equivalents that I have ever seen. Finally!

There is also a brief explanation on numerology with respect to the pip (numbered) cards and the numbers corresponding to the Major Arcana cards, which is quite sufficient for The Astrological Layout purposes.

In my opinion, once you have adopted and feel comfortable using Mr. Maerz's Astrological Layout, you will not want to go back to the Celtic Cross Spread again. The depth and breadth of information you can obtain from The Astrological Layout, especially using Mr. Maerz's three-layer spread, is so much greater than what you are able to extract from the Celtic Cross, that this will make the already irrational, although very popular, Celtic Cross laughable.

Why the 4-star rating? Well, for the poor self-publishing of the book. For example:
The numerous incorrect use or omission of commas within sentences, spelling errors, and the inconsistent application of capitalization of key words throughout the whole book are all very distracting. Very poor sentence compositions - painful to read and at times awkward to decipher the true meaning. This book cries out for the involvement of an independent, professional editor.
The sample "readings" are poorly done: It assumes that you already know quite a bit about your client and your reading just proves or confirms her situation.
Also, a more detailed explanation of each card's basic meaning would have been helpful. I even found many of the Inverted cards meanings deficient.
And finally, there must be a better method of estimating the timing of a predicted future event. Who would really want to deal out each time, in addition, a Celtic Cross "on the side" just to establish the timing component?! - Especially when nearly half the deck is already dealt out.

Other recommended books to gain a more well-rounded knowledge of the meanings of the cards would be:

1. "Understanding Tarot: A Practical Guide to Tarot Card Reading" (1991) by Jocelyn Almond & Keith Seddon - a small pocket book that is easy to carry with you, and still acceptable for a quick look up of practical description of individual Upright and Inverted cards meanings;

2. Sandy Anastasi's "Tarot Reader's Workbook" (2009). She gives detailed and very practical explanation of the meanings of individual cards, both Upright and Inverted, and especially in combinations with other cards - very useful for your more complex Readings. For pure predictive purposes, this book would definitely be my first choice. But, there are a few misprints in the book, I have found less than a dozen, where she mixes up the names of cards - for example, she refers to the Ten of Cups when it should have been the Ten of Swords, or to the Six of Pentacles when it should have been the Eight of Pentacles, etc. Unfortunately, you can only 'discover' these discrepancies after you have already studied and learned the meanings of the cards. This is still a superb book for predictive Tarot. The eBook version is illustrated with true colour pictures of the Original Rider-Waite deck (no blues);

3. "The Complete Book of Tarot Reversals" (2002) by Mary K. Greer. Great book with excellent description of Upright and Inverted card meanings. The sentences are well and clearly written - using common English words - and can be easily understood. However, one flaw of this book is that too many different, and sometimes even conflicting, meanings are assigned to each card's Upright and Inverted positions; and

4. "Easy Tarot Guide" (1987) by Marcia Masino. Beautifully illustrated with true colour pictures using the traditional Rider-Waite-Smith deck, she gives detailed description of the meanings of the cards, both Upright and Inverted, and excellent in-depth description of the symbolism in the Major Arcana cards. A very good "text book", with exercises and answers, on learning the Tarot, but not at all difficult to read or understand. This is a physically heavier book (weight-wise) for its smaller size, because of the higher quality paper used in the printing process. This book is a little treasure, although not quiet as 'accurate' as Ms. Anastasi's or Ms. Greer's book.

Be careful though in your selection of companion books! Some, if not most, other Tarot books can give irrational, confusing and conflicting card meanings. For example, I have found the meanings ascribed to the individual cards by Ms. Eileen Connolly in her "Tarot: A New Handbook for the Apprentice" and "Tarot: The Handbook for the Journeyman" books very vague and almost unusable as a predictive tool. And some books even ignore Inverted card meanings.

In my experience, most authors can be overly verbose. But Mr. Maerz's book is one book where you wish the author would have included even more instead of less. I would love to see an expanded, professionally edited, revised edition of his book!

In conclusion, I highly recommend this book. And you can even buy an eBook version on Lulu-dot-com for a lower price. But for the low price and convenience, you could easily own both the paper and PDF versions.
