A grand send-up of the detective story...

Not since the "Fletch" series in the 1970s has there been such an irreverent send-up of the detective genre. Blaise Hanagan's "Bologna Caper" is to "The Maltese Falcon" as the movie "Airplane" is to "Airport". Sorry, this analogy limps, and how many people remember "Airport" anyway, but it's the best I can do. I mean, a cross-dressing detective with a mind-reading parrot named Mabel as a side-kick? What could be better than that? And the parrot is smarter than our hero...
... who is Thomas Treadwell, P.I., formerly a detective with LAPD. As told in the verbigerative vernacular of the protagonist (a smart choice, use of first-person narration, because it allows the author some otherwise dodgy misuse of grammar, syntax and animal husbandry clichés), the story unfolds around the problems of a steatopygous stereotypical dumb blonde's whose missing husband puts her at the top of LAPD's suspect list. Only she's not so dumb, as it turns out, and the excess tissue actually is a bit further north. Or upgradient, as the more tech-inclined Mabel might observe. Mabel, by the way, has a nose (or beak, I guess) that is easily the equal of all the gas chromatographs in LAPD's forensic labs. The supporting cast is no less wonderful, starting with Shirley, Treadwell's 70-something secretary with a black belt in karate and a penchant for redeeming the souls of hardened ex-cons.
So... for non-stop unrelenting totally depraved silliness, buy this book, turn those pages. It really is the literary equivalent of "Airplane".
