Present VERY Tense

Whoever calls Fred Tomasello's Walking Wounded a book about Vietnam is sadly mistaken. This memoir, told with admirable immediacy in the present tense, recounts not only the author's journey to manhood through service in the U.S. Marines but also his recognition of the futility of war. Simultaneously gut-wrenching, funny, infuriating, and philosophical, Walking Wounded pulls no punches in detailing both the obvious and visceral horrors of war and the subtle impact of waging war on the psyche of the individual warrior. Coming from a family with a lot of military experience--grandfather, father, uncles--and having a son on his third trip to what he calls the Sandbox, I have a tremendous respect for and appreciation of the honesty and authenticity of this book. Fred Tomasello writes with power and undeniable authority in the recognizable voice of a thoughtful man. He says what needs to be said, and we are all better for listening to him. This is splendid work.
