ed. by Ann Kjellberg and Leonie Haimson Educators, parents, and scholars challenge the Bloomberg administration’s claims of progress in the New York City public schools. Authors DIANE RAVITCH and DEBORAH MEIER are respected scholars; JENNIFER JENNINGS, AARON PALLAS, DAVID BLOOMFIELD, and EMILY HOROWITZ are academics who have researched NYC schools extensively; STEVE KOSS is a former public school mathematics teacher and parent; STEVEN SANDERS and JAMES BRENNAN are former and current NY State Assembly members; HAZEL DUKES, UDI OFER, DEYCY AVITIA, and LEONIE HAIMSON are education advocates; SOL STERN, ANDREW WOLF, and MAISIE MCADOO are journalists covering education; PATRICK J. SULLIVAN is a public school parent serving on the Panel for Educational Policy, the city’s central school board.

Good essays explaining the problems of mayoral control in NYC
By justbeworks
Worth the read for parents, teachers, and those forming opinions about the largest public school system in the nation. It is an in-depth look at what happened in 2002 when a powerful billionaire mayor bullied, cajoled his way and ultimately convinced state legislators to allow him the complete power to control the educations and thus, futures of 1.1 million school children. The result has been disastrous with regard to the will of the people and our democracy. The statistics (included in the book from 2009) for so many children are heart-wrenching and the opinions of academics and those in positions of state power are all part of the 17 essays.
If you want to understand what came before the current mess and privatization-take-over of NYC's public schools, this book will fill you in up to a point.
Sadly missing are essays from Black and Latino leaders in education (sorry, but one Latina community activist, and Hazel Dukes do not count! Unfortunately, the Hispanic Legal Defense and Education Fund and the NAACP were suspiciously slow to respond to the crisis of Black & Latino children's education in NYC until just recently, but that's another issue worthy of analysis..... ).
As a NYC parent-activist of color, I had hoped the book would include opinions from those whose communities and children were most affected by Bloomberg and Klein's awful policies. An analysis from the Black/Brown perspective based upon the ruling power-dynamic of race, class and gender (after all, public schools are historically women's spaces, while policy-making remains politically patriarchal) is the reason why this book was only given 4 stars. Hopefully, a second edition will take on the years after Klein's reign, and capture just how bad an education mayor Michael Bloomberg turned out to be.
