The Whole Picture of the Depression

I've read several histories of this era, but most were focused on politics or monetary policy and missed much because of that. This book is a re-creation of the entire age, as it occurred. The biggest surprise to me was the documentation of the lack of trade due to protectionism. Also, the author uses data from the period to show that unemployment dropped when trade was restored following Hitler's assaults in Europe, in 1939, three years before the US entered the war. This book destroys most of the myths we hear continually from academics and politicians, because it is a detailed history that covers the whole picture. Anyone seeking understanding should read it. It is also very well written.
