Influencing Israeli Public Opinion Through Stamp, Coins, and Currency

Yitzhak Zahavey, who has studied archeology and participated in important digs, including at Tel Megiddo, has written an unusual book with an unusual thesis. He has looked at Israels coinage, stamps, paper currency, and medals and how the archeological depictions have changed over time. Israelis are all crazy about archeology, and since it's all around them, everyone is an amateur archeologist. The first postage stamp depicting archeology was issued in 1867, twenty years after the first postage stamp was issued.
Zahavey's thesis is that we can learn a lot about how a government presents itself to its people and to the world by analyzing the motifs and depictions on it stamps, currency, and coinage and how these depictions change over time in response to external events.
Very well illustrated, with hundreds of photographs, Zahavey has also correlated the stamp issuances with contemporaneous events. So for example, early Israeli stamps (the rare Doar Ivri series) depict coinage from the days of the revolts against the Greeks (the Hasmoneans) and the Romans (Bar Kochba), along with the patriotic inscription such as "Freedom of Zion." Just in time for the Camp David meetings, the government issued stamps with an Islamic motif, emphasizing multicultural tolerance. Zahavey notes that 100% of the coinage issued by the Bank of Israel depicts archeological themes, as well as about half of the banknotes. Archeological themes in medals are also explored.

Disappointing catalog

Mr. Zahavy's book does give some interesting insights into the role of archeology in creating and maintaining a sense of common history for the Jews, particular those living in Israel. However, the cataloging of stamps, coins, and notes with archeological motifs is woefully inadequate. The section on circulating coins (pages 42-50) is riddled with errors. The main ones are that he does not recognize that the pruta ceased to be issued after 1960, and the lirot coins ceased in 1980. He also confuses the 3 pomegranate theme of the 5 agorot of 1960-80 with that of the one lira of 1967-80/10 new agorot of 1980-4. The agora/lira series of coins is left out of the chronologic sequence on page 46. His catalog showing individual coins and stamps give no description of the theme shown. It also shows only a fraction of the medals with archeological themes (it's possible that he leaves out many stamps; that's not my area of expertise).

Not At All What I'd Hoped For

I was disappointed with this book. I expected much more information about the objects and sites on the stamps. The charts are illegible, and the stamp (and other) images are VERY poor and grainy. There is also much wasted space on the image pages. Bottom line is, if you already own the Krause-Minkus catalog for Israel, you will gain nothing by buying this book.
