About the Author
Dr. Dan Montgomery has held dual licensure as a Psychologist and Marriage & Family Therapist for 30 years. He has taught counseling and psychotherapy at Pepperdine University Graduate School of Psychology and the University of New Mexico. Dr. Dan has trained and supervised pastoral counselors in graduate schools, churches, counseling centers, and the chaplaincy.

Compass Therapy Approach to Pastoral Counseling

This book meets a global need for competent counseling in churches and Christian counseling ministries. Whether the reader is a pastor or a licensed therapist, the Compass Therapy Model expands knowledge about personality, human nature, and techniques for healing and helping across a broad range of needs. I felt secure in Dan Montgomery's veteran hands. His thirty years of experience as a psychologist and pastoral counselor gives the book a conversational tone, even though a considerable amount of theory and practice is covered.
The practical topics are very helpful, like how to: handle a first contact, address confidential phone calls and email, structure a first session, work with a person's whole human nature, deepen emotional rapport, apply healing techniques, implement prayer during sessions, and bring counseling to a close, as well as communicate one's pastoral counseling role to church and community. Counseling That Really Works

This book is a tremendous resource for professional counselors, pastors, and even a layperson. It provides a simple, but also thorough understanding of human personality. The book is based off of a theory of psychology that Dr. Montgomery calls Compass Therapy. Compass Therapy is based off of four quadrants of human personality, which include love, weakness, strength, and assertion. A person becomes a healthy individual when they learn to live with each of these quadrants in balance.
The practicality of this book was easily my favorite aspect. Each chapter depicted the struggles of a different counselee. Dr. Montgomery walks the reader through the process of identifying what is wrong and how to lead a person towards a more healthy personality. Of course the four quadrants cannot encompass every specific personality trait, but it is a wonderful resource. I would recommend this book to anyone interested counseling of any kind.

Pastors: Take Back The High Ground!

Dr. Dan Montgomery invites pastors to take hold of the counseling and coaching aspect of their job description. He shows pastoral counselors how to do this in caring, practical ways through his Compass Therapy approach, a model that is both research-based and Christ-focused. This man can write: he gets across both theory and its practical application so you feel like you're the one doing the therapy. And his experience shows through every example, every technique. Highly recommended if, as Dr. Montgomery says, you want to "take back the high ground of counseling, an opportunity for ministry too often relinquished to mental health professionals."
