Not what I thought it would be -reads like a boring diary

This book read more like a daily diary. Some days had long entries, some days had short entries. The author repeatedly compares the states she visits to California. California is a unique state -all states are. All states have their beauty and culture that cannot be understood or measured by visiting for just a few days. I was born and raised in California. I have had the pleasure to live for several years in three other states. The only thing I miss from California is Calistoga and Yosemite. When you live for several years away from your home state you learn that all states have merits. No state is perfect. I had to laugh several times when she complained about tourists throughout the book. She, herself, is a tourist. As far as Southern cuisine goes, it's sad to read from her book that she never took the time to try REAL Southern cuisine which is not all fried. Also, how can you drive through Louisiana AND NOT VISIT NEW ORLEANS?! Sure, she had an okay time in Baton Rouge, but New Orleans showcases Cajun and Creole food like nobody's business. I thought I would read more adventures about cooking in her galley, why she chose to shower at campgrounds and not in her vehicle, how she managed to check out RV campgrounds to compare in order to figure out where she would stay (did she just look at the entrance to the camp only?). She is a very brave woman to have done this trip. She is very brave to have bicycled on trails where she saw no one for several hours. She certainly has strength for all the walks she took (some took several hours). When she described a really beautiful place, there were no pictures of it. Instead there were other photos. What really stunk is that the photos were in black and white. I would have liked to have seen the sunrises and sunsets in color, as she described them. She's pretty honest and open about her thoughts and opinions on alot of subjects. She frequently mentioned how alone she felt yet also mentioned how great that she had no one to tell her what to do or where to go. I do hope that on her next RV trip she doesn't use a Roadtrek. I think she would have a better time in a 28 foot through 34 foot travel trailer (would feel alot more like a home on wheels than sleeping in a van) with a Hensley Hitch (eliminates sway), being pulled by a strong truck with a short bed. I wish her all the best in her next adventure. She certainly has the spunk to do it. By the way, if she visits North Dakota, only do that in the summer time and be sure to go to Medora, ND. The other three seasons are way too cold.

Boring, overpriced diary of an ill-prepared traveler

Enticed by its terrific title and intriguing premise, I bought this book. The first couple of pages were interesting, but it was all downhill from there.
The author, Lois Requist, admits she wasn't paying close attention when the RV dealer spent a scant hour demonstrating how to operate the systems of her new conversion van. A follow-up lesson in the driveway with her son and daughter-in-law apparently didn't help much either. Thus, big chunks of this story concern her inability to deal with the rig's water supply, furnace, electrical power and so on. Her constant complaints become tiresome.
And despite the time she supposedly spent planning and researching her trip, she's frequently dismayed to discover that a place where she's camping is too remote for her to stroll into town, or that a drive of X miles between stopovers takes many more hours than she imagined.
Most of this book reads like a letter home that would put even her closest relatives to sleep. A typical entry: "I arrived at [name of site], which is [descriptive phrase straight out of a tourist brochure]. I ate a lunch of [list of menu items] at a little café and met a nice man, and we talked for three hours about our families."
Requist claims she went in search of the real America, but comments throughout the book reveal otherwise. She gripes that she gave up listening to local radio stations while driving since they're mostly devoted to talk shows, religion, and country music. Umm, yeah, that WOULD be the real America, and isn't that what you said you wanted? In another entry, she expresses delight at finding someone she considers her intellectual equal...because that woman reads New Yorker magazine. Requist's frequent, irrelevant swipes at anything beyond her narrow political views make it clear that this trip is more about finding pretty scenery than exposing herself to new experiences.
Requist also tosses off random observations without bothering to check them before publication. For instance, she says Frank Lloyd Wright designed "Falling Waters in Wisconsin." The home is actually called Fallingwater (one word, no "s"), and it's in Pennsylvania. Again, the lack of attention to detail reads like an off-the-cuff letter to the family at home, rather than an account worthy of professional publication.
"RVing Solo" is way overpriced. A comparable trade paperback of this length would normally list for $15 or less. Given the lack of quality, this one's barely worth $5.
For a much better account of a cross-country trip in a conversion van, check out "Live Your Road Trip Dream" by Phil and Carol White. Not only does that book give an interesting account of this couple's year-long trip across America, it provides an excellent guide to preparing for such a trip. Too bad Lois Requist didn't read it before she left home.
In stark contrast to Requist's close-minded views, the Whites are open to everything they encounter in the local scene - including regional radio, politics and the like. And despite mechanical setbacks and a medical emergency, they maintain a delightful roll-with-the-punches attitude that's so refreshing after Requist's constant carping. After reading the Whites' book, you'll be eager for a cross-country adventure. If you read Requist's book, you'll want to crawl under a rock.

"RVing" and "Solo" are both themes

"RVing" is a great read, and a great how-to book -- full of down-to-earth insights and practical information. For anyone contemplating a cross-country trip, "RVing" is terrific.
But this book is more than a travelogue. For me, this book also records a voyage of personal discovery, a quest for what it means to be solo at a certain point in one's life -- whether that condition is temporary, as when one embarks on any trip alone, or whether that condition reflects what so many of us face at a certain point in life. Throughout, a lot of really fundamental questions are raised -- the effects of being uprooted; relations with friends and children and siblings; the loss of a beloved spouse. All these are addressed without pretension, but with a keen sense of humor, genuine wisdom and real humanity: gutsy, and good!
