Asbestos Head is the man

CONTAINS MAJOR SPOILERS!!!

“Asbestos Head” is not a book about the Hollow Earth, as erroneously stated by one of the other reviewers. I downloaded the work (it's free) in the hope of reading some entertaining stuff about flat earth conspiracies or the like. Instead, I was forced to sift through a short fiction story with an almost stereotyped “hippie” message.

Everything is subjective, everything constantly changes, Christianity and capitalism are authoritarian, love and sex should be free, why bother having kids, smoking weed and using psychedelic drugs is the way to go, live in the Now, love and forgive everyone unconditionally, meditate á la Zen, read Kerouac or Alan Watts…

Weirdly, this wasn't published circa 1967, but in 2008! I frequently laughed out loud when reading about Asbestos Head (the main character) and his weird friends Pin Head, Pot Head and Machine Head, to mention just a few. The hippie and love summer message is absolutely undiluted, making you see how absurd and unpractical it really is. Several characters are typical “misunderstood geniuses” or “INTJs” who come across as awkward and slightly autistic to everyone else. The solution to all problems seems to be to empty your mind and stop thinking altogether (or, I suppose, smoke weed). The anti-social angle is also obvious.

Interestingly, the short story has a misogynistic slant. The two women, Matriushka and Mary, are the two most negative characters. Mary (her name isn't a co-incidence) is depicted as a prostitute who once claimed to experience a virgin birth. Matriushka is a shallow promiscuous gossip who nevertheless demands “commitment” from Asbestos, who refuses and treats her to a lecture on free love. In the last chapter, Matriushka is locked up in a basement and apparently abandoned by a Zen monk! That a story about unconditional love and anti-authoritarianism turns out to be anti-female may or may not tell us something about the author's own “issues”. Another interesting fact is that Machine Head, who is a Cyborg and part of a hive mind, is treated as a positive alternative to humanity, although he too falls short of the true vibes of the Now.

What's the story *really* about? Presumably mimicking Robert Heinlein, the author reveals in the very last chapter that Asbestos Head is Jesus Christ who has returned to Earth to teach his true gospel. This presumably explains why his parents are named Joseph and Mary (the prostitute – note also the conflation of the Virgin Mary with Mary Magdalene), while Asbestos himself is said to be an “orphan”. Since Jesus-Asbestos turns out to be a hippie Buddhist, the world refuses to listen, prompting the misunderstood savior to commit Japanese-style suicide (seppuku) in the last chapter! Without this plot twist, the story would just be a long litany of pseudo-spiritual preaching for the eternally unsaved.

I was waiting for the Flat Earth /Hollow Earth material, so I admit I was somewhat disappointed by “Asbestos Head”, but I suppose you get what you (don't) pay for. The author Eric Dubay describes himself as a 30+ American living in Thailand where he teaches Yoga and Wing Chun part time while exposing the New World Order full time. Yonassan Gershom is a Hasidic Rabbi deeply engaged in the modern world for most of his professional career. He is a vegetarian and animal lover, almost as much as he is a champion of humanity, looking to create understanding and peace through application of nonviolent means within the framework of his traditional Judaic principles, with a good dose of Hasidic wisdom, a variety of prayers, poems, and stories interspersed throughout his narrative. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book to get a broader picture of Rabbi Gershom, not to mention the inspiration of his many anecdotes, articles, poems and prayers. The topics and situations included in this book helped round out what I learned from reading his earlier books: "From Ashes to Healing", dealing with reincarnation of souls who endured the Holocaust, and "Jewish Themes in Star Trek", a fun yet through revisiting of those old-time TV show scripts and movies.

JoAnn Vickers Wilburn is a writer and performer. She has recently moved to Branson Missouri from Nashville Tennessee, where, as an actor, she appeared on stage, in commercials, music videos, industrials and films. She was an on-air personality and frequent event emcee for WAMB radio. She was also the spokesmodel for John Casablancas Modeling Studio, and did public speaking and motivational seminars. She has done voice-overs, historical character improvisation and storytelling.

I found it inspiritional and illuminating to the problems and crisis facing our youths. This book will make a great gift for those that found their way or need to find their way to truth and life. Thanks greatly for the book and for the author. I look forward to reading about other cases of the "lost" being "found". BTC

really needs a LOT of work

This author needs to really do some more work on her publications before trying to sell them. I suspect this book is self-published. And the only review on here is done by the author???! That being said, I also want to say that I admire Ms. Howard's drive and ambition and it's wonderful that she is doing something she loves.

Gritty and Intense: The Real DC

DC Homicide Detective Mitch Credle's novel Strangers in the Street is one gritty real read, a journey into reality chocked with thugs, gangsters and rogue cops. From boys to men we follow Smokey and Black, a.k.a. Daniel Slade and Ricky Walker, one thoughtful and deliberative, the other impetuous and reckless. They bond as adolescents growing up in the rough section of Clifton Terrace spending their days hanging out, selling drugs, and committing street robberies. A crap game takes a turn for the worse and gunplay decides their future. Black takes a murder rap for Smokey and serves a juvenile life sentence. While Black is locked up until he's twenty one, Smokey moves to the suburbs growing up in a relatively charmed existence. One becomes a hardened killer, the other a cop and years later their paths reunite and reignites their tender mutual affection. Theirs is a friendship illustrating how our past forever remains with us as constant as the loves of our lives.

Credle takes the writer's adage "write what you know" to heart, leading the reader on a journey into the heads and hearts of vulnerable young men born into an environment where they are groomed and nurtured in the street life. Love plays a pivotal role and a redeeming force in both their lives. A determined father succeeds in removing Smokey from the ghetto life while Black hardened by time served returns to his uncle's drug dealing enterprise. He resumes the street life killing and robbing until he falls in love with April, a good woman. Love gives Black's life purpose but at this point it's too late. The master of his fate not even April's nor Smokey's brotherly love can save him.

Strangers in the Streets is a good read despite eschewing the standard dialog format it nevertheless flows. Few writers are able to capture the depth, breadth and reality of street life as experienced by the young African American male with it distinct language and code of conduct. Mitch Credle does it well because he's been there growing up on the streets of D.C. and rising up to a Homicide Detective with the Metropolitan Police Department.

Strangers in the Streets is a suspenseful read with actual empathy for the villain Ricky Walker otherwise known as Black. The book leaves the reader a sense of hope. Indeed, there is hope for the young men imprisoned and those queuing up to take their place. That hope can only be manifested by changing the environmental forces that shape their lives.

It is said, men are the products of their environments, some rise above it, many do not. It's certain by changing their bleak environment we can raise the hopes of many.

This was one of the best books I have ever read! I could not put it down (even read while I was at work). Being from the DC metro area, it was nice to read how real things are and the landmarks that are well known in the area. I am patiently waiting for part II and see where Smokey's head is at. Kudos Mitch Credle!
