A wonderful companion for adult learners

"A modern cellist's manual" is a wonderfully fun introduction to the start of the long journey that is learning how to play the cello. As a beginner, I found the many pictures illustrating different aspects of technique, along with explanations of the dos and don'ts, very enlightening. The exercises have been chosen well to underline the main points in the text, and the little tips are indeed very helpful little things. The book is well written, funny and engaging.

I very much recommend this book to other adult beginners, as a supplement to taking lessons with a qualified teacher. Chances are that your teacher will have another approach, but using this manual as an in-between-lessons lesson in itself makes understanding the process a lot easier.

This book should come with your cello, but if it doesn't buy it yourself.

Emily has not only written a helpful cello manual but also created a companion to sit down with you when you play. What sets this book apart is the personal touch she brings to every page. She starts the book with an introduction saying "I was once a bad student, too". The theme of compassion with the student (while maintaining high standards of quality) runs throughout the book. One good example is the "Emily Recommends" section at the end of some chapters for those moments when inspiration is flagging.

The photos are excellent. And Emily offers encouragement for adult cello students who are having a crisis of faith. I finally took the tapes off my fingerboard that showed me where the notes were in first position. She reminds you of the basics, and she warns you of the dangers of persisting with bad habits. Best part: the exhortation to NOT QUIT. I only wish the book was longer. There is more subject matter to cover in later editions.

NEW, UPDATED SECOND EDITION IN 6X9"

I have just read this Second Edition after reading the First Edition(which I reviewed), and it is now a comfortably larger book than the First Edition (6x9" rather than pocket book size) which makes it easier to read... the print is larger too. It costs a couple of dollars more, but it also includes an important new chapter.

This is the same detailed, blow-by-blow account of a real-life couple's SUCCESSFUL defense against a bank's collections attorney without using a lawyer, including every legal pleading that was filed in this case by both Plaintiff and Defendant... but it NOW includes a present-day follow-up concerning surprising continued collection attempts.

The new final chapter details the manipulative and unscrupulous tactics that numerous debt collectors have been attempting to use on these people, even though one of these collectors was already defeated in court... and even after all of the alleged credit card accounts have already expired beyond their State's Statute of Limitations.

The law doesn't seem to matter to these bottom-feeding debt collection sharks. They will continue to prey upon people who don't understand what legal protections they have available. They will try to deceive, manipulate, and offer false reassurances about repairing your credit report and/or absolving you of your debt ... when in actual fact you will most likely face increased income taxes AND lose your legal protection against ongoing lawsuits under your State's Statute of Limitations.

This latest edition provides first-hand information about numerous experiences following the couple's defeat of the first round of debt collectors. This will help readers understand what to expect in the years following a successful defense against collections.

Well worth it

I read the first edition of this book and am in complete awe of it's author.
How she managed to do all this is really an amazing story in and of itself.
The other information in the book is important and valuable, and well worth owning.
Had not heard about the follow up info, mentioned in another review. Not surprised, however.

I was disappointed. It is not a how-to for avoiding bankruptcy!

I bought this book thinking I was going to learn how to avoid bankruptcy. I was sorely disappointed. The book is about how the author avoided it -- which, granted, she says in her youtube video. I incorrectly assumed it may also tell me how to do it. Far from it, in fact. It oddly enough does not go into great detail about how she avoided bankruptcy. Only the general idea is there. And the author seemed to imply that the technique she used to avoid bankruptcy 5 years ago may no longer be a valid approach today. Half of this book is about the author's combat with a creditor suing her. So half the book contains nothing but the legalese it took for her to defeat them. The story was somewhat interesting, and the legalese could be useful for someone defending themselves, like she did -- but it may have to be the same circumstances. But it is not the reason I bought the book. I did not learn how to avoid bankruptcy. So buyer beware.

Shipping charges

The item I got was exactly what I needed. My daughter is from the Philippines and it the book is just what she needs. My only beef is the shipping charges. The book cost about $20, (a reasonable price), and I opted for the 4 to 6 day shipping charge,(about $10). My daughter needed the book as soon as possible for her school assignments. Unfortunatly the book did not arrive in the time promised,(Dec 14). Instead it arrived more than a week later. Since shipping charges were half the price of the book, I really expected it to be delivered on time. I could have saved plenty of dough if I was willing to get the book when I actually did. I am pissed!!!

This is a great piece to have in your library to compare and contrast with your working bible. I find it very interesting to see how man has evolved and interpreted god's word over the centuries. I find it very important to get as close to the source as possible to ensure that purity is maintained. I also find it a great opportunity to revisit many passages and encourages critical thinking about the bible. My only comment is that I wish this was better indexed by book I ended up indexing it with 3M note tabs myself and increases the functionality quite a bit.

Heartbreak saved by Africa's Spirit

The author candidly pours his heart out to the reader from the turbulence faced in fast paced London to the everyday struggles of being a teacher/development worker in Africa (Zambia). The description of characters (some more shady than others) is amazing, while his real life depiction of his daily struggles are at times sad (ever-growing struggles of HIV/AIDS and corruption), but gripping. While reading the book, occasionally I felt the author's pain in some of the sad but true problems he faced at his school. Having been a development worker in Tanzania, yet traveled to Zambia I understand the author's struggles and triumphs - most of which I can relate to, thus it's fitting for anyone who has worked or volunteered in Sub-Saharan Africa. Moreover, the internal struggles the author wrestles with are sincere, distressing, and endearing; which makes the book that much more humbling to read. For anyone who enjoys reading about people's adventures, Africa, and life's daily challenges... this is a must read.

Excellent Memoir

Mark Burke entered the Volunteer Service Organization (England's version of the US Peace Corps) after a tumultuous breakup with a girlfriend left him feeling skeptical and depressed. "Glimmers of Hope: Memoir of a Volunteer in Zambia" is about Mark's experiences in Zambia from October 2004 through December 2006.

Mark starts off with the training he received with the VSO before he went to his assigned school to teach. Mark states he received about 3 days of training whereas his counterparts received about a week. He laments in his memoir that he wished he had learned the local language. He feels he would have better understood the people of Zambia. In contrast, US Peace Corps Volunteers receive three months of language and cultural training before reporting to their assignments.

Mark's memoir is a excellent account of his time in Zambia including his frustrations with the culture of corruption and hypocrisy. He details teaching in Zambia, his interactions with the Zambian teachers and other Zambians, the harrowing trips into town for supplies, the encounters with large snakes, along with the experience of being in an African country during an election. Mark does tend to be pessimistic about life in general in his book, but a lot of volunteers do end their service with this attitude.

I really enjoyed reading this book and highly recommend it for people who are considering any type of volunteer or missionary work in Africa. Reading this book will give the reader a realistic idea of just what their service in Africa may be like.

My only criticism of this book is the lack of formatting. Mark has self published this book so there are formatting issues. Some of these have been addressed in the second edition, however.

incoherent, no continuity, did not provide any useful information or insights into Zambia volunteer work. Culture and people of the country were secondary to author's own personal concerns.

About the Author
A member of the International Thriller Writers, Dan Pollock was born in New York City to a family of writers and grew up in Laguna Beach, California. A former syndicate editor with the Los Angeles Times, Pollock is the author of five thriller novels--Lair of the Fox, Duel of Assassins, Orinoco (originally published as Pursuit Into Darkness), The Running Boy and Countdown to Casablanca--and a specially commissioned "logistics" thriller, Precipice.

Great edge of your seat thriller

This book was a great edge of your seat thriller. I read it in one sitting... couldn't put it down. Non stop action from one scene to another.
What was surprising was the humorous moments along the way.
Made me laugh out loud numerous times. I'm going to look at the author's other books now that I have discovered him. Well worth it if your looking for a great book.

It keeps you running....

Dan Pollock is a gifted storyteller and he has crafted a true masterpiece in the Running Boy. His work rivals the best in the field and this book is a testament to that.
Pollock's verbiage is taut and descriptive enough that you can easily visualize the action. It's a fast, easy read that's hard to put down after Pollock's well crafted narrative draws you in to the action and keeps it at a brisk pace with short chapters and fast plot development, including lots of mayhem. The prose is polished and articulate. There is even some romance and strong, solid, female characters that would appeal to the fairer sex. I brought the book on a honeymoon cruise and finished it in a couple of readings, so drawn into the action was I. Ethan Dean is the Running Boy's mysterious protagonist; an introverted recluse and former Wall Street wiz kid running an internet based trading newsletter. The Russian villains are disfigured in either body or spirit and sometimes both. They are particularly despicable and zealously murderous lot; hellbent on trying to kill a young boy for reasons not immediately clear. These antagonists take villainous behavior to a new low, gruesomely dispatching anyone who gets in the way of their reckless and nefarious scheme. Pollock employs inventive plot twists to move the plot forward. I won't tell you more lest I prove to a spoiler. Read The Running Boy.

Pollock nailed it.

Just finished Running Boy. He nailed it again. He's so good with evolving character. For me, plot is great, mystery is great. But without character it's all stick figures and who cares. This is why I can't read most of the big writers, featuring the handsome wealthy guy and the gorgeous young girl with big chest. Many times while reading his first two books I thought, I wonder if he's going to go down street A here or someplace else. Pollock never disappointed and usually surprised me. The Turkish(?) bad guy in the first book was not all bad after all but without making me feel manipulated and cynical, which I hate. And I loved the screwed up stock market guy in Running Boy. Okay. Now I'm starting his third book, Orinoco, and already wondering what I'll read when I finish it.
