Landscape of the American Southwest-A View

For some 30 years David Lee has been writing narrative style poems about people living in the country he loves the most: the rural Southwest. He was Utah's first Poet Laureate and has won a string of prestigious awards and only recently retired as chair of the Dept. of Humanities, Languages, and Literature at Southern Utah University. This is his fifteenth book of poetry and the first to explore in depth what has always been in the background of his work-the desert and canyon country of the Back of Beyond in the American Southwest.Thus, this book is his effort to honor the heartbreaking beauty of, and despair for the destruction of, his beloved homeland. The book is divided into four sections or basic elements consisting of earth, fire, water, and air. Beginning at dawn and continuing throughout the day in a walking journey the reader is treated to Lee's theological, philosophical, and environmental meditations. The book opens and closes with a requiem and provides landscape portraits that reach far beyond the traditional "regional poetry." Lee simply see's things "out there" commonly missed by others. This is a must read by one of america's finest poets.

very inspiring!

This book was recommended to me by someone who believed that women could easily birth their own babies at home without medical assistance. I read the book and sure enough, with each beautiful story of home childbirth, I came to realize that it really is a natural process that is wonderful and empowering for the new mother.
Some of the stories moved me to tears. I felt very inspired and warm while reading, and the author herself has a great sense of humor and made me feel like part of a sisterhood. There are some really cute little comics here and there throughout the book that constantly made me smile. It's basically a collection of examples of women who believed in their own bodies and followed their instincts to have a perfectly safe and natural experience bringing their new babies into this world.
After I read this book I read Grantly Dick-Read's book Childbirth Without Fear and Laura Shanley's Unassisted Childbirth, and now I am proud to say that I no longer believe the myth that childbirth is an emergency. I wish all women could lose the fear they have about having babies!

This book is filled with wonderful and positive birth stories. I read it before the unassisted birth of my second daughter and I loved it. I'd reccomend it to any expecting mother.

wonderful book

this is a wonderful book on birth, no scary stories in here. i feel that it is a nice remedy to all the scary stories that surround birth. not all birth is a horror story. if you want some funny, beautiful, loving birth stories this is the book for you. even if your own birth didn't look like any of these, it is nice to know they do exist.

seeking the truth

I found this book while researching for a screenplay I am working on. In my reading on the Hopi Native Americans and the ancient Egyptians I noticed strange similarities between the two cultures. Given the accepted model of history today, these links are considered coincidences at best. I thought I was going crazy, until I came across this book.

Thomas O. Mills has gone to painstaking lengths to write this book and it shows. He draws more parallels between the Hopi's and Egyptians than I ever thought possible and includes startling revelations about Stonehenge, the pyramids, 2012, and the polar ice caps.

It's a must read for any truth seeker out there, especially those who are interested in the Hopi's and their belief system.

An Interesting View on Hopi Emergence Story

The author Thomas Mills comes from a background of working at Hopi land. I have talked with him and he is a very caring person. The book is an easy read but focuses on important connections between Hopi and Egypt and how those connections relate to the world cycles. I think Thomas has hit the nail on the head with this book and that most people who have read other books on the Hopi will be interested in this book. He has written another book titled "Stonehenge If This Was East" which goes with this book. I hope that Thomas considers writing some more but it seems very few people know about his work.

I found Thomas O. Mills research to be interesting. I can't say that I've come across anything like it, comparing the Hopi legends with the Egyptian legends. There's a lot of information packed into this short(100+ pages), oversized book, mostly pictures, maps and a lot of math. At the end of the book, Mills claims that you should be able to read the hieroglyphics on the front cover, and interestingly enough, I could.

Mills starts of the book talking about his interaction with the Hopi, where he and his mother opened and operated the Hopi Culture Center on the Second Mesa. Mills gives us the creation myth story of the Hopi as recorded by Frank Waters in The Book of the Hopi. The Hopi seemed to know about the chakras, just as first mentioned in the Indian Vedas. I don't know if any other writers have made this connection.

Mills then claims that the Hopi have been around since the time of the pyramids and shows in an illustration of the pyramid complex of Egypt, how it corresponds the Hopi myth story of the Creator instructing his nephew of plan on earth. Plausible connection, though Mills says that the Hopi make no such claim.

If our ancestors wanted to leave us important information, pictures are the surest way to pass on information through the ages. Carving it into stone is the only way to assure the message has a chance of surviving more than a few generations. I'm sure our thumb-drives--filled with the knowledge of our time, will be mistaken for bad jewelry. Maybe we should start carving things into stone.

Throughout the book, Mills lays out his theory, showing the reader through pictures how it all fits together. Even for a book filled with illustration, this isn't an easy book to get through. It's like reading a text book, with a great deal of information to understand. That's not to say that the information is not important. The Hopi believe that that we're headed to a purification, where only the pure of heart will be welcomed into the new world. Considering how long they've lived in their desert environment, holding onto their traditions, we should heed their warnings.

This is a good book for those wanted to delve more deeply into the meanings our ancient ancestors might have left us, will find this a fascinating book. The ideas are new and different, and worth looking into.

This is a great inspirational book for all ages and all faiths. My favorite section was Spiritual Healing and Growth. It was a great enforcement to some basic facts, but things we don't always remember when our faith is being tested. "We are the architects of our fate. The master builders of the house we make" . . . but the character built upon the Solid Rock will forever endure". In times like these, times of war, times of poverty, times of flood, times of broken homes, it is great to remember our source of help and strength. R. Holden has done a great job of covering day to day struggles and accomplishments. We are looking forward to the other volumes.
