I hope I had read this book much earlier. It is so helpful!

I am a international student and just graduated. I have been struggling looking for a job in the US and someone recommended this book to me.
I have know some hidden rules for international students before but after reading this book, they became very systematic and clear.
I wish I had read this book much earlier and I recommend any international student who one who wants to find a job here read this book. The earlier, the better.
Stop listening to the rumors of how hard it is to find a job sponsoring H1B. Those who think it's extremely hard are not doing it right. I have seen many international students making mistakes when they are talking to the employer and they don't know it. Read this book and avoid those mistakes.
You can read his blog first. That's how I finally decided to buy this book.

"Step out of your comfort zone"

I'm glad I was in the room while the author Dan Beaudry was giving the presentation about this subject. And it is shocking to me how the "hidden job market" can be as large as it is. I never questioned the effectiveness of referral from inside. It just never occurred to me how I could find the way to get around the huge iceberg standing in between me and the jobs.
After attending Dan's lecture and reading the book a few days later, the definition of networking is completely redefined for me. It's not about just chit chatting and asking questions you could easily find online, it's about being mutual beneficial and being helpful to each other. The illustration of how informational interview could work also clears out my skepticism about why the people you reach out to would like to agree to give you an interview, and in what respect can you be helpful to them. Again, it's about being mutual beneficial, even if it is a potential benefit in the future for them, the power ties can make a huge difference.
I completely agree with the point made in the book, which is, you have to do something other people wouldn't want to do to gain an edge over them, and I can't be more sure that this is going to work. From this moment on, building my own power ties will be the way to find my future job. I'm extremely fortunate that I found this gem early in my job searching process.

A must read even if you go to one of the most prestigious institution...

When I moved to the US for my undergraduate studies, this book is what my only cousin in the US gifted me! I am yet to step into my academic journey, but alas I already have to worry about job-search! Though this may seem quixotic, trust me I am so glad that I got hold of this book so early during my time in the USA. Initially, I thought maybe this book won't be as necessary for someone like me who goes to one of the most reputed institutions in the world, but soon came to appreciate that going to such prestigious institutions doesn't change the game much for international students if you don't play it the right way. My cousin's decision to gift me this book speaks volumes about what international students like him might have gone through to land a job and what they wish they knew way earlier about the job-search in the US. The right way of playing the job-search game -- by making connections and leveraging them to find your spot in the hidden job market -- is what Dan emphasizes in his compelling and easy to follow book. So get hold of this book as early as you can and act on the lessons that Dan has to offer. Dan's way is not easy but definitely secure to a great extent. Surprise someone 'Fresh Off the Boat' with this gem!
